Laser Eye Surgery

One of the most amazing innovations in surgery has to be laser eye surgery. For people that have astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness, laser eye surgery can prove to be highly successful. This type of surgery is often used for different types of eye disease and problems such as cornea implant. While not everyone makes a good candidate for surgery of this kind, many people do. A good surgeon would do a complete medical examination to determine if the surgery can or cannot be done.

To better understand why laser eye surgery is so successful, it is important to understand the eye. A person's vision is based on cornea tissue, which depending on thickness and other factors, would determine if a person sees up close or far away. For people who need a cornea transplant, the cornea is removed and laser eye surgery used to reshape the cornea. With the tissue gone and the eye reshaped, light is now properly refracted, hitting the retina, as it should. With this, a person's vision is greatly improved.

Laser eye surgery is now something done around the globe by very skilled surgeons. Interestingly, while most patients are adults, this surgery can also be performed on children in that it is perfectly safe. To have laser eye surgery performed, the surgeon would only do one eye at a time to determine the results before moving on to the second eye. Typically, a person's vision will not improve 100% but the difference before and after surgery is remarkable.

Although there is some redness, swelling, and discomfort after surgery, as long as the patient follows the doctor's orders, risk is very slight. Of course, anyone having this type of surgery should notify the surgeon immediately if any problems arise. However, because it is such as safe surgery and so effective, people need to remember that potential for problems is extremely low. Even so, everyone considering laser eye surgery needs to find the most qualified surgeon possible.

For someone with cataracts, laser eye surgery is also highly beneficial. Although a person will likely have both eyes affected, only one would be operated on at a time. In this case, the cataract is removed, again using lasers. While most laser surgeries on the eyes are quick, cataract surgery usually involves a stay in the hospital for several days as this is a more intense surgery but when compared to the old method of surgery and the much longer recovery time, staying in the hospital for a short period is no big deal.
